The Palace Hotel

The Palace Hotel 1

The Palace Hotel, originally opened in 1875 is an icon of San Francsico. It under went an extensive renovation in 2015. The renovation took 9 months and included an overhaul of its guest rooms, pool, fitness center, lobby and Garden Court. This inspiring old grand dame of a by gone age was updated with great sensitivity and taste by California-based interior designer Beatrice Pirelli of Indidesingn.

Of course one of the most spectacular spaces in the hotel is the beautiful Garden Court. It was subtly updated with more modern furnishings, upholstery and rug, while maintaining the original Austrian crystal chandeliers and Italian marble columns. The Garden Court is absolutely magnificent and is flooded with natural light from the stunning original iconic domed glass ceiling. The space has been portioned out so that half servers as lobby lounge called the GC lounge and a restaurant dinning area. When visiting San Francisco I highly recommend stopping in to relax, have a drink and take in this beautiful space.

The hotel has 533 guest rooms—which were also updated with a bit more contemporary  touches and accents without losing its old world charm. I thought the rooms were very comfortable, tastefully appointed and the updated color palette is quite soothing. The Palace Hotel was San Francisco’s first luxury hotel and at the time one of the largest in the United States. The hotel has entertained generation of visitors and famous people from various industries, famous political figures, and celebrities.

Another noteworthy aspect of the Palace Hotel is The Pied Piper. This bar & restaurant was named after the famous Maxfield Parrish painting that hangs over its bar. Artist Maxfield Parish was commissioned to paint the The 16-foot-long mural for the hotel’s grand re-opening in 1909, after the building was nearly leveled by the great 1906 earthquake and fire. The restoration includes an invisible coating, designed to better protect the artwork for years to come. The restaurant/bar’s beautiful mosaic tile floor and rich wood paneling are signatures of the Pied Piper, which has been a favorite meeting spot of visitors and locals for more than a century.
