The Father of Brazilian Furniture Design

While in Brazil I fell in love with the work of Sergio Rodrigues. He has been called the father of Brazilian furniture design. Indeed, he has established a new paradigm in design, setting himself apart with his very own language. Sergio Roberto Santos Rodrigues was born into an intellectual and artistic Rio de Janeiro family on Sept. 22, 1927. His style is clearly recognizable Brazilian mid-century identity. His designs are well known for their use of distinctive woods indigenous to Brazil like jacaranda, peroba and imbuia.

There are 3 chairs that I found especially inspiring. First, the “Mole” chair seen above. His “Mole” armchair when originally launched was an immediate success, comprised of jacaranda and upholstered cushions supported by leather straps. The piece, informed by Sergio Rodrigues’ playfulness and wit, readily became associated with a typically relaxed Brazilian attitude and lifestyle.

The second chair is the “Diz” which features sculptural and comfortable design aesthetics. I experience these chairs while staying at the boutique Hotel Fasano in Rio de Janeiro, the “Diz” has quickly become a much sought after contemporary classic, and was awarded 1st place at the 20th edition of the Prêmio Design at the Museu da Casa Brasileira.

The third chair is the “Voltaire” Sergio Rodrigues’ interpretation of the classic Bergère, the “Voltaire” armchair , which is characterized by its geometrical external solid wood base and its ultra comfortable, seemingly floating, frame. This chair was also used at the Fasano in Rio de Janeiro. It was beautifully done in leather, just stunning.
