Beautiful design and amazing tech, The Silicon Valley automaker Tesla unveils its new sport utility vehicle the Model X. Described as the safest and fastest all wheel drive SUV in history. The Model X is fast, really fast, it goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds. “It’s important to show that any type of car can go electric,” said Elon Musk. “We showed that you can make a compelling electric sports car with the Roadster, we showed that you could do it with a sedan and now we’re going to show it can be done with an SUV.”
The Model X is loaded with lots of cool new features and tech. We have all come to expect a high level of sophistication from Tesla but its the way all the tech, features and functions are beautifully integrated and presented. Thats great design!
Safety with a capital S
The SUV’s floor-mounted battery forms the foundation of the Model X’s architecture, creating a low center of gravity that reduces the chances of a vehicle rollover. Additionally the battery structure also strengthens the Model X against side impact intrusions. Without a standard gasoline engine, the space under the hood is freed up, allowing for a large impact-absorbing crumple zone.
In addition to designing a structure that is safer than comparable SUVs on the market, Tesla has also fitted the Model X with what it calls Active Safety features. The cars cameras and sensors continually scan the roadway interpreting the likeliness of collisions, and automatically engaging the brakes in case of an emergency. Ultra-sonic sensors are fitted all around the vehicle, which allow the car to automatically steer away from the perceived danger.
The Model X has a super sophisticated air filtrations system, with a medical grade HEPA filter. The system removes pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution before circulating into the cabin. There is even a button called bioweapon defense mode. Elon explains it like this “The air filtration system ensures that you have air cleanliness levels comparable to a hospital operating room, When the car is operating at maximum capability, we can’t detect any viruses, bacteria or spores – zero come through… if there’s ever an apocalyptic scenario of some kind, hypothetically you just push the bio-weapon defense mode button ”
The Falcon Wing rear seat doors open allowing access to the second and third row seats from almost any parking space, all it needs is a foot of clearance. The Falcon Wing doors are on a 2 hinged system that allow the doors to articulate smoothly up and out of the way, giving passengers easier clearance to get in and out. What is really cool are the ultra-sonic sensors that calculate the roof height and side obstacles, so if you are in a garage which has a tight clearance, the car will automatically calculate a new opening arc for the doors. I’m already in love with the current way the Tesla door handles present themselves to the approaching driver, but this has been taken a step further, now the front doors actually open for the approaching driver, Elon calls “your invisible chauffeur.”
There is an amazing panoramic windshield which gives the driver unparalleled visibility. The under seat storage capability is another big plus. If you can’t fit everything into the space SUV, The Model X also has a towing capability of 5,000 pounds. Another great feature is the incredible sound system, it is 560 watts and has 17 speakers–just awesome. Of course the sound system was designed in-house specifically for the Model X.
The Model X is available in a six seat or seven seat interior layout. The seven seat interior maximizes passenger capacity while the six seat interior opens the second row to the third and provides added space for extra baggage or cargo. Wheel sizes range from 20 to 22 inches, and the air suspension has five settings that allow it to provide as much as nine inches of clearance for off-roading (let say tough spots) and as little as 6.5 inches for highway driving.
