I love creativity in all its many expressions and today I want to share with you some truly inspired examples of great signage. Anyone can create a sign but it is a real talent to make a sign that is smart, clever and highly effective at communicating.
Signage should of course be able to communicate in a short time whatever its message. We live in a world where our attention span continues to get shorter and shorter. Our world is filled with clutter and lots of things trying to get our attention. Good signage should of course be clear and concise in its message but that alone does not qualify it as great signage—-that is just the bare minimum expected from any sign. Truly great signage accomplishes more, it is brand enhancing, entertaining and beautiful.
I love signage where you can see real thought has gone into its design. Many of the best use the materials or subject of the signage to enhance their message. Great signage often demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of typography. It can be the subtle use of type that can enhance a signs impact. Knowledge and use of materials is also an important element of great signage. As a designer I have partnered with some incredible signage companies that have proven to enhance my work with their deft knowledge of materials and lighting.
Below are a series of signs that I have come across that I consider to fall into that rarefied category of great signage.
